Thriving environment

Our business is intrinsically linked to the environment as we rely on it for our raw product, water. For this reason we do all we can to ensure there is a clean, resilient and sustainable supply available for current and future water customers whilst ensuring there is enough water available to support the needs of the environment too. Our responsible business commitment to improve the health, safety and wellbeing of our people and communities.

We will report on our progress against our Thrive365 strategy and continue to report the number of health and safety regulation breaches. For mental health and wellbeing we will develop volunteering opportunities.

Desired impact – For South East Water to ensure all employees, partners and communities go home safely each night, but that they are also enjoying good health and wellbeing.

How have we performed?

Health and safety continues to be a fundamental part of how we work. The focus leading towards the 2025 to 2030 period has been the review of our Health and Safety strategy, with an aim of revitalising our commitment into the new five year period. We are gearing ourselves up for a more formal external auditing programme, with the opportunity to drive for continuous improvement alongside benchmarking ourselves against the wider industry.

We linked our ever present health and safety commitment, with our focus on improving security and company standards. We achieved this with the launch of our Triple S campaign- Safety, Security, Standards. On a bi-monthly basis we are holding company wide stand-downs, to share awareness on issues affecting our employees around these subjects. These campaigns will help us to drive the right messages, focus the employees and promote continuous improvements.

We have listened to concerns raised around vehicle comfort and are leading for a change in our focus in this area. We enlisted the help of our ergonomic and manual handling specialist, to help us gain a different perspective in how our transit vehicles are fitted out. Our new vision is to have the racking layout of our vehicles, designed around our employees, and not around the vehicle. This new focus will allow for improvements in our employees health, reduce long term musculoskeletal injuries and promote an engaged workforce.

Our continued desire to put our employees at the heart of our business, further focusses us on our dedication towards our Wellbeing strategy. The strategy is now going into its fourth year, and still holds the same importance as it did when it was launched. Our mental first aiders are still ever present and provide the much needed support and guidance to all employees who may need them. Our monthly newsletter shares the stories of our staff’s experiences as well as promotes our four Wellbeing pillars, Physical, Mental, Financial and Social health.
