Despite the best efforts of Storm Bert to thwart our plans, we welcomed over 50 customers through the doors of Bewl Water Treatment Works on Saturday 23 November 2024.
With four tours taking place throughout the day, it was an opportunity for Kent and Sussex residents to have a behind-the-scenes look into how river and ground water is transformed into clean drinking water and pumped to homes and businesses.
Customers were also offered a glimpse of the site’s £61 million upgrade work, which, upon completion, will see it increasing pumping by 17 million litres of water per day – a 65 per cent increase.
Bewl Water Treatment Works has been operational since 1975 and today, when running at full capacity, pumps out 26 million litres of drinking water per day – the equivalent of more than 10 Olympic-sized swimming pools. It supplies 30,000 homes across the Weald of Kent.
Many of those attending commented that it was an eye-opening experience and that, before their visit, they had very little understanding how water gets to their taps.
Customer feedback included how they found the tours informative and engaging, it was interesting to understand how the treatment process worked and one customer shared a specific thank you for providing them with clean drinking water.
