Our business (non-household) customers play a key role in helping us protect our valuable water supplies so there’s enough water for everyone, at the same time protecting the environment, in the future.

We have a new performance commitment to reduce the three-year average business demand for water to 90 million litres of water per day (Ml/d) by 2030. This is a nine per cent reduction.

We’ll offer smart metering and water audits to our business customers. We’ll also work with farmers and landowners so we learn more about how they use water. This will help us to support them better to reduce how much they use.

How have we performed?

During the past 12 months we have seen an increase in business demand, totalling 98.5 million litres of water per day, this is despite us increasing our efforts to support businesses in reducing their demand. This increase has caused a 2.7 per cent increase from our 2019/20 baseline. We have therefore incurred a £0.33 million penalty payment.

During the past year we undertook 75 water efficiency visits to schools in Kent and Sussex, where we fix leaking taps, toilets and offer advice.

These visits result in an average saving of 1,000 litres of water a day, saving money as well as water.

We’re working to develop partnerships with hotels, businesses and water retailers across the south east to roll out water saving visits to non-household customers.

We’re also working with farmers to develop pilot projects which will reduce water use on their farmland.
